Travel: Washington D.C.

My first time to D.C. was a spontaneous adventure while I had some off-time from an Army School. I brought my Canon 70D DSLR and my Canon AE-1 to capture some pictures.

Of course we had to see the Washington Monument. I loved how the same shot with the 2 different cameras came out, and comparing them side-to-side. It was very crowded, signs that the pandemic was wavering just enough for tourism to start picking up again.

The Lincoln Memorial was even more bombarded with tourist and visitors. But still, we enjoyed seeing Abe in person and even reflected on the Gettysburg Address that was displayed beautiful within the memorial as well.

Arlington Cemetery was a MUST on my list when visiting Washington D.C. The immense size of the cemetery, the number of graves of all the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice, it was indescribable. There was so many, both with the names of those known, and even those unknown.

I served as part of the Army’s Honor Guard for a short time, and during that time I learned about the history of the Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier. I also learned what it took to be a part of the prestigious and elite group selected to guard the Tomb. Watching the changing of the guard left me speechless. The precision, the discipline, the professionalism, it was simply incredible. Obviously it was the highlight of my visit.

I am proud of being from Hawaii and I miss my island home so much. But I am also proud to call Maine my home now. I had to represent both my states in D.C.

Overall it was another unforgettable adventure that I am very grateful to have experienced. Always looking forward to the next adventure!
