It was by chance that I fell upon the privilege to being able to share memories with families that have found the love and generosity of Rett’s Roost. Rett’s Roost is an amazing organization who’s main purpose and mission is to offer a sanctuary for families impacted by childhood cancer and child loss, cultivating a community of empathetic and therapeutic support to help ease the stress of trauma, isolation, and grief.
Jim and Deana Carvan are parents to Everett, the inspiration to Rett’s Roost. Through their story and experience, they created a loving community of families that have similar tragic stories of cancer and loss, and all together they encourage deep healing of mind, body and soul. Free retreats, vacations, and virtual services are offered frequently to families affected by cancer and child loss.
When I had volunteered to be a photographer to a short summer retreat they were offering to families I was excited to capture happy moments on camera for them. There were 3 families, the Bottari Family, the Carter Family, and the McCary Family. I was nervous meeting each of the families 1 by 1. These are families that have gone through unimaginable struggle, and I just wanted to provide a good experience for them.
Each and every one of the families were amazing. The Bottari Family were the first ones I worked with that morning. Mom, Dad, Sadie, Sophie, and the spirit of their son and brother, Seth brought golden smiles for me to capture. Then the Carter family with their son Jordan, and his angel brother Dakota were next. They were glowing with so much love, and to add to their moment capturing? They shared that they were expecting another boy! Then last, but for sure not least, the McCary family with their 3 little ones, Nathaniel, James, and Anna. With them I couldn’t help but laugh, the way they all had fun together, and the energy they had the entire time, it made the time fly by so quickly.
My heart was so full by the morning’s end. I am incredibly grateful that Rett’s Roost gave me the opportunity to capture these moments and portraits for these families. Not only did it provide me experience, but it humbled me. I admired the strength and the perseverance of each of these families. I am in awe at the existence of a beautiful program like Rett’s Roost and all that they provide and work hard for.
