Being Outside: Perch Lake, ME

My little family started out on our adventure on a Sunday afternoon, almost spontaneously. Me, Maggie, and our husky, Obie set out into the snow covered forest trail with the intent of enjoying ourselves and being outdoors.

The start of Rick Swan’s Trail Loop, Maine.

I don’t have much more experience with snow than my 1 year old husky, but he faced it with a heart warming enthusiasm and excitement compared to my inquisitiveness. There was no question if Obie was having the absolute best day of his life.

Am i the bestest boi having the bestest day of his bestest life?

Obie’s pure joy was contagious, and I let it comfort me as made a conscious effort to be self aware of my thoughts and feelings. Trudging through the snow almost felt familiar, and I found myself remembering the trek I would take with friends all the way up and down the shores of Oahu, near turtle bay when we’d go on fishing trips. The wet snow I felt in the moment almost blended with the wet sand in my memory. The way the sun played with the colors, almost like glitter on the top layer of ice made me happy because it reminded me of how the sun would play the same way in the tide pools. Familiarity in a foreign place was so comforting.

My view through the entire hike was because of my slow pace.

It was an opportunity to capture some great pictures, and a chance to soak in some much needed time outdoors. Coming from an island and experiencing what Maine has to offer gives me a sense of self-growth. I am so grateful for Maggie for giving me the nudge I needed to better myself and to capture the sense of adventure I always crave.
